When planning to go on a winter country outing, carefully study the rest program, weather forecast for the coming day and use our advice on winter outfits. These factors will be fundamental for choosing a set of personal clothes, shoes and accessories.

The general approach to clothing should provide the possibility of wind and moisture protection from external weather factors, active moisture removal from the body with intense physical activity and effective heat preservation depending on your individual body characteristics and air temperature on the street. Let’s try to disassemble these principles into simple and understandable components.

The first layer. Underwear.

Let’s start with the first layer of underwear. Its main task is not to absorb the moisture released by the body during physical activity and take it further to the outer layer of clothing. And, the more serious the journey and the higher the physical activity, the more carefully you should pay attention to the first layer. I strongly recommend to exclude during the trip underwear (including panties and socks) made of their cotton fabrics, because they actively absorb and retain moisture. In turn, the presence of wet clothes in direct contact with the body very often leads to abrasions and is one of the factors of human freezing when physical activity and fatigue decrease. Today the market presents a huge variety of thermal underwear, which is specially designed for a long and active stay in an open environment. As a rule, the heat-protective properties of the first layer are indicated by the producer in the activity index – often in three grades, the asset, hybrid, and passive. The passive is the warmest. Choosing thermal underwear is necessary so that it sat tightly on the figure, covering the whole body, then it effectively works. The choice is yours, depending on the individual characteristics of the organism, to bear the cold, the upcoming weather and the travel program.

The first layer. Socks.

A few words about socks. Choose specialized trekking socks. Their main difference from ordinary lies in a high-fitting ability that saves a leg from scuffs, high abrasion resistance and good moisture retention, which protects the foot from freezing. Thickness and heat-saving properties should be selected independently depending on the above factors. Usually on travels socks are worn in one layer, so that the leg feels comfortable.

Second layer. Warming.

The second and subsequent layers of clothing are responsible for maintaining heat and further draining moisture. The number, thickness and material of these layers are already more diverse. The main thing is that the moisture released by the body should not be absorbed by clothing, but should be taken away. The general approach to the number of layers should provide the opportunity to regulate heat exchange as smoothly as possible when physical activity changes. In other words, it is better to wear more warm clothing than one warmer one. Then gradually removing or dressing these clothes you will always feel comfortable. Very important, that clothes should not restrict movement.

The outer layer. Protection from bad weather and warming.

The top layer is the age-old struggle between effective protection against external environmental factors (wind, low temperature, snow and other precipitation), maximum removal of moisture from the body outside, effective insulation, beautiful appearance and ergonomics (presence, pockets, adjustments, ventilation and etc.). Try to choose the top layer of clothes – both pants, and a jacket with the presence of a membrane in the coating material. Most often it is marked on the labels with the icon and prefix tex in the name (Gore-Tex, Simpa-Tex, Pertex, etc.). Pants are desirable to have with a tight elastic underneath to prevent snow from getting into the boot. If this option is not provided for the pants, then it is advisable to purchase additional gaiters that will effectively protect the shoes from getting into moisture, snow and forest debris.

Accessories. Headgear, gloves.

Headgear and gloves. When choosing a headpiece for a trip, be sure that it is not blown by the wind and can effectively protect from the cold and wind at least the ears, and ideally the cheeks and lower part of the face if necessary. A good addition can always be a jacket hood. If it is, do not unfasten it before the trip. Take with you additional sports hat. If strong wind, frost or a trip on open transport (snowmobiles, horses, dogs, deer, etc.) is expected, the windproof mask covering the face is not superfluous. Protection of hands during rest and travel is very important function, because limbs quickly freeze. In addition to good insulation, gloves or mittens should also be protected against wetting. Be sure to grab an extra pair of gloves or mittens, and maybe two for children.

Perhaps, one of the most important issues in the collections for winter holidays is the question of footwear. It is necessary to pay close attention to this. If you expect to spend a few hours outdoors in the winter, be sure to take care of the quality warming of the feet. Ideally, it should be a specialized warmed high-necked footwear without high heels and not very tight on the leg, so as not to interfere with blood circulation. It is very good if a layer of membrane is built into the shoes, which allows effectively to remove moisture and prevent the leg from freezing, especially if it is intended to change the warm room (car or bus, cafe or temporary warm room) to open air without shoe changing. If the thaw in the street shoes should not get wet.

Useful and important little things.

Going all day to nature, think about some useful little things. All the things that you take with you are best packed in a small, 20-30 liters backpack – so much more effective than carrying a bag with you. Even with cloudy weather, the level of ultraviolet reflected from the snow exceeds the norm, and on a sunny winter day in the open space, the quality sunglasses is simply necessary. In bad weather or if you are planing to ride on an open transport, ski goggles are very effective. If you have such ski goggles at home, be sure to take them with you or ask your friends. To protect the skin from weathering and frostbite, use special creams and hygienic lipstick (this applies not only to women). If the weather promises to be sunny – it makes sense to grab a sunblock for the face, especially people with sensitive skin. The cream protection factor is better to take higher – from 25. Check the battery life of your phone and take the charger with you. A flashlight, a small folding knife and a small metal thermos with hot tea or coffee always add confidence, so you can also throw them into your backpack. Do not forget individual medications if you use them. If the weather is cold or you are not completely sure of your equipment, check the outdoor store and take some chemical heaters with you. They are not very expensive at all, but it is quite possible to warm your hands or insert them into your shoes. Well and certainly charged before an exit and with spare batteries (on a frost they cease to work faster, than in usual conditions) a photo and video equipment will allow to save as much as possible memory of travel and rest.
